Charon was the guardian of the river between the Great Underground Empire and Hades, the land of the dead.
A skeleton with a red hat, he was oarsman of a large boat made of bones. He charged a flat rate of two zorkmids for passage. He accepted exact change only. Charon would ferry any passenger across the river in either direction until they had passed through the gates of Hades, at which point he would refuse passage entirely.
