Grawl was an evil warlock during the last days of the Great Underground Empire and enemy of Syovar. He looks like an incredibly old man, wrinkled and stooped. He wears a robe of midnight blue and a pointed cap decorated with stars. But his powerful and malevolent voice belies his harmless and almost-comical appearance.
The Cavern of Doom[]
He killed Syovar's wife Lorena, and with a powerful spell he teleported their son Logrumethar to the Cavern of Doom, transforming him into a hideous creature called Grum.
Grawl also took advantage of the feud between the twin dragons Leblong and Berlong; he made a bargain with Leblong promising to kill Berlong, and Leblong agreed to guard for him a tunnel in the Cavern of Doom for 1000 years. It is not known what happened to Berlong or if Grawl indeed fulfilled his part of the bargain, but Leblong remained steadfast in his promise, guarding the cavern where Grum was exiled.
Grawl was living in a big stone hut by a an underground stream in the Cavern of Doom. The hut's first floor was one large room, with a small wooden table and some chairs; a stone spiral staircase led to a musty cobwebbed cellar where wooden tables were covered by his curious items: scrolls of parchment, a stuffed owl, a rack of wands, bottles of liquid and powder on wooden tables. A sign on the wall stated that everything was his property and warned anyone who would disturb them.
However when Grawl was away, Bivotar and Juranda sneaked into his hut and Bivotar picked a scrolls with a spell for speaking with animals. They left moments before he returned. However he noticed that something was missing and started looking for the thieves.
Other options[]
Grawl appears in the book only during the wrong choices; if the kids tarry too long in his hut, he finds them there upon returning and transforms them into newts.
Much later, after advancing, if they decide to trace their way back, they meet Grawl, who is still looking for those who broke into his hut; he transforms them into beetles and steps on them.
Conquest at Quendor[]
Grawl was mad at the kids who rescued Logrumethar. To take revenge he caused a black hand to form in their world, which grasped them and teleported them into the dungeon of an old, deserted castle used by him. However, with the indirect "help" from Jeearr, the kids summoned a nymph and then Syovar to rescue them.
Indeed, Syovar arrived soon after and engaged Grawl in a magic battle during which a wall of the dungeon exploded, allowing the kids to escape. Lightning bolts flash from Grawl's arms, but they exploded harmlessly off Syovar's invisible shield. Syovar conjured a huge monster that leapt at Grawl, but in time, he conjured an even fiercer one that devoured Syovars. They circled each other, edging toward the center of the room to avoid being cornered by the other.
